is a Japanese form of bodywork, whose
origin lies in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The word shiatsu means “finger
pressure”- as this is the main technique used in giving shiatsu.
Pressure may also be applied to the body with the practitioners’
palms, thumbs, elbows and feet to promote the flow of energy through the
body. The philosophy and treatment approach are similar to those of acupuncture
as like acupuncture, Shiatsu works on the flow of energy that circulates
through the body in specific channels or Meridians and uses some diagnostic
methods but shiatsu does not use needles and the receiver remains clothed.
Some people describe Shiatsu as “acupuncture without needles”
or “massage with clothes on”.
A combination of pressure points, gentle stretching, holding techniques,
palpation and relaxing movement are used to aid movement of Ki (energy)
in the meridians – this helps to calm mind and body, improve body
functions, and ease stiffness and tension .
Shiatsu is suitable for all ages and a wide range of conditions –
each session is adapted to the individual.
Each session lasts approximately one hour. The first session may be slightly
longer since your practitioner will take detailed case history to develop
a complete picture of your health according to the principles of oriental
medicine. The session usually takes place on a padded mat or futon at
floor level, although it is possible to receive Shiatsu sitting on a chair
if you are unable to lie down. The client stays fully clothed. Following
a treatment, there can be a feeling of increased vitality and you may
feel invigorated yet relaxed.
