Seven Simple Ways to Improve your Health and Fitness at Work

By: Ntathu Allen

Do you ever feel tired and worn-out at work? Maybe a little tense and anxious about the amount  you have to do. Have you ever taken reports home to complete, yet feel guilty, resentful at the impact this has on your relationship with your family?

You spend a large proportion of your time at work. Feeling comfortable and relaxed helps you to be more creative and productive.  Failure to relax, leads to you feeling overworked, stressed and undervalued. This has an impact on the way you interact with your colleagues and customers. When you are unhappy at work, your health suffers.  This may have a negative effect on your employer's public profile, as it effects your ability to do your work properly.

Here are seven practical tips you can easily adapt into your daily work life to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed at work.

1. Create a comfortable space to work in. For instance, if you work at a desk, stack or store away files as you finish working on them; keep a clear space on your desk dedicated to personal photos or inspirational messages. If you share an office, place healthy plants or fresh flowers around the room and put up pleasant pictures.

2. Familiarise yourself with your employers' vision. This helps you to see the value of your work to your employers’ and customers you serve.

3. Listen and talk with your colleagues about their interests outside of work. This

encourages you to bond and connect with colleagues on a more personal level.

4. Be sensitive and open with your feelings. This allows others to be aware of your needs. If you are working on a demanding project, support from your colleagues can make all the difference to how you feel about what you are doing.

5. Be passionate about your work. If you are dissatisfied with your job, be bold and change jobs. If this is not possible, find aspects of your work which you enjoy, are good at and find ways you can spend more time doing this part of your job.

6. Smile and nurture yourself during the day. Remind yourself you are a wonderful person. Throughout the day give yourself a pat on your back for doing what you do.

7. Take deep breaths and regular stretch breaks during your day.  This helps to release the build up of tension and stress. You will feel fresh and rejuvenated.
