Affirmations - future

By: Neil Davidson

Are you happy? Are you living a positive, proactive life? Sometimes it’s not easy to keep negative thoughts at bay, especially when the modern world conditions us to react to many situations in a negative way. However, there are many effective ways to combat this negative conditioning, one of those being the use of affirmations.

The use of affirmations is a simple practice that can give you satisfaction and happiness in your life. Living, speaking and thinking positively will enable you to truly reach and attain your goals. When you practise changing your thought processes to be aligned with the positive, this also aligns your physical and mental being with your higher self. Your higher self, or spirit, synergises with your positive thought processes and allows your spirit to radiate out and be its full, glorious self. Conversely, when you speak or think negatively, your spirit is pushed back and you don’t allow its full potential to radiate out. The simple spiritual practice of affirmations can add spiritual fuel to your daily life. What if your life becomes too hectic and you don’t have time to do that one-hour meditation or yoga class? You can simply speak, think and practise affirmations at any time, in any place, without having to be in any special position.

You are what you think you are

We all have a negative ‘chatterbox’ in our head questioning our ability. For many people, this negative chatterbox becomes their default way of thinking. It can almost seem as if we are conditioned by modern society to think that way. Whatever the reason for negative thinking, affirmations are a way of changing that negative chatter so the positive becomes the default. Your thought processes are what you use to create your reality; your mind is what you use to communicate to your creative force, or spirit, what and who you are and what you want to do with your life. When you speak negatively you are seeing, attracting and creating a negative reality. When you think positively you are seeing, attracting and creating a positive reality, which is more conducive to, and in alignment with, your spirit.

What is an affirmation?

An affirmation is a positive statement said in the present tense. For example, “I accept myself and trust the process of life.” The power of affirmations is in the “right here, right now”, which is why using them in the present tense is so important, leaving no room for the negative chatterbox to creep in. Compare these two simple statements: “I will one day be happy” and “I am happy”. You can see how much more power the latter has. Another important aspect of affirmations is using visually exciting images and words. For example, instead of just saying “I feel happy”, how about saying “I feel totally fulfilled and at peace in my life”. Already you can see how such a simple thought can become a powerful tool.

Repetition is also an important aspect of affirmations. Bad habits take a long time to break, and the negative chatterbox is no exception. When you wake up on Monday morning, don’t lie there and tell yourself “I can’t cope with my life”. Instead, repeat to yourself silently or out loud, “I love my life and can handle any situation life throws my way”. Repeat this to yourself at least 10 times and see how much better you feel about the day. Then, if your negative chatterbox tells you otherwise, repeat the same positive affirmation 10 more times until it becomes your default. When you start practising affirmations by speaking, reading or thinking them, your mind (at subconscious, unconscious and conscious levels) accepts this as a reality, allowing your higher power to set about achieving this reality.

Absorbing affirmations in the alpha state

Today’s busy world means you can be constantly in the beta (unreceptive) state whereby your mind’s mental energy fires neurons at random. Therefore, it is highly effective when practising affirmations to be in a state of meditation or relaxation so the affirmations can be absorbed directly into the subconscious and unconscious levels of your mind. The relaxation or meditation state is an alpha (receptive) state when your neurons fire in harmony. The alpha state is a highly effective time for receiving new information and one in which affirmations go straight into the subconscious and unconscious levels of your mind. These subconscious and unconscious parts of your mind control the negative chatterbox and your conscious thoughts.

To further enhance the power of your affirmations, give reference to your higher power. Your spirit is the creative force within you, so giving reference to your spirit aligns you with your true being and empowers you to bring your spirit into daily life and express it. Instead of just saying “I am making all the right decisions in my life”, an example of a more powerful affirmation is: “My higher power is guiding me to make all the right decisions in my life.”

Affirmations are suitable for everyone and can be used at any time. They can align you with your spirit in a simple and effective way, giving you the opportunity to overcome the negative chatterbox or any other pattern that is holding you back from achieving the life you want to lead. Right here, right now, you can achieve your heart’s desires.
